Chemainus grew up around its sawmill, and a lot of the old town was built in that era: timber houses with steep gables, dormers and front porches, close together on the streets above the harbour. Today the murals bring the visitors, but for anyone living in one of those houses, it is the rooflines that shape the gutter work.
A steep, cut-up roof looks good. It also funnels water and debris to a few places, and those places are where gutters fail.

Where a heritage roof sends the debris
Picture where things land when it rains:
Roof valleys. Where two slopes meet, the valley collects needles and leaves off both faces and pours them into one short stretch of gutter. That stretch fills first, every time.
Dormers. A dormer splits the roof above the main gutter, and debris banks up behind its cheek walls before washing down in clumps. The gutter below a dormer often fills unevenly, packed in one spot and clear a metre along.
Porch roofs. A lower roof under the main eave catches whatever overshoots the upper gutter. Its own small gutter is easy to forget and often carries the worst sludge on the house.
Clearing the middle of a run and calling it done misses all three. On these houses we work the problem spots by hand and flush each run to see where the water hangs up.

Long runs on old fascia
Many old-town houses have gutters hung on fascia boards that have seen a lot of winters. When a gutter blocks, water backs up behind it and soaks the board. On a timber house, soft fascia means a new board and new trim, not just a new gutter. Keeping the water moving is the cheapest way to avoid that work.
Downspouts on these houses often run into older underground pipe. If the downspout is clear but water still backs up when we flush it, the problem is below ground, and we will tell you so.
Why choose us
Why choose us for gutter cleaning in chemainus
Valleys get extra attention
Where two roof slopes meet a gutter, debris piles up first. We clear those spots completely, not just the easy middle of the run.
Careful with old houses
Hand clearing, protected trim and no force on brittle seams. Older houses get treated as older houses.
Town and country covered
From the old town grid out to Saltair and Westholme, we work small lots and rural acreage alike.
Insured, guaranteed, local
Locally owned, insured and WCB-registered, with ten-plus years of island gutter work and a guarantee on the job.

Beyond the old town
The town does not stop at the heritage blocks. Newer houses on the streets toward Echo Heights sit next to a forested park, and fir needles there are steady through the year. Around Fuller Lake and out through Westholme the lots open into rural acreage, with downspouts running to ditches and rock pits instead of storm drains. North toward Saltair, larger lots with mature trees make for long gutter runs and heavier loads.
Each of those is a different job from an old-town house, and we quote it that way.

Chemainus gutter cleaning FAQ
Why does one corner of our gutter overflow every time it rains?
On a house with roof valleys, look up at where the valley meets the gutter. A valley gathers water and debris from two slopes and drops both into one short stretch of trough. That spot packs first and overflows first. We clear it, flush the run and check the nearest downspout can keep up.
Can you clean gutters on a heritage house without damaging it?
That is how we approach every older house. Gutters are emptied by hand, ladders are placed so they do not mark old trim or siding, and nothing is pried or forced. If a section is too far gone to clean safely, we tell you rather than making it worse.
Do you cover Saltair and the rural areas outside town?
Yes. Our Chemainus area runs from the old town out to Saltair in the north, Westholme to the south and the houses around Fuller Lake. Rural lots are a regular part of the route.
Should gutters in Chemainus be cleaned more than once a year?
If your roof has valleys or dormers and there are mature trees on the street, twice a year is usually right: late fall after the leaves drop, and spring to clear what the winter storms brought down. A simple roof on an open lot can often manage with one visit.
Do you take away what you clear out?
Always. The debris is bagged as we go and leaves with us. Old town lots are small, so we keep paths, flower beds and the sidewalk clear while we work.
