Fixing what broke it
Gutter Repair, Starting With the Cause
Sagging runs, leaking joints, split elbows and loose downspouts usually trace back to one of five causes. We find the cause first, then fix the gutter.

Most of the gutter repairs we see in the Cowichan Valley trace back to a handful of causes. The damage looks different on every house, but the reason behind it usually falls into one of the groups below. The cause matters, because a repair that treats the symptom and leaves the cause in place tends to fail again within a winter or two.
Most problems turn up during a cleaning, when we are at the roof edge looking down into the trough. Some people call because they have noticed water where it should not be. Either way, we find the cause first and quote the fix second.
Weight in the trough
A gutter is built to carry water for a few minutes at a time, not a winter’s worth of sodden fir needles. When debris sits in a run season after season, the load pulls the hangers forward, the outer edge drops, and water gathers in the low spot and adds more weight. Eventually the hanger screws strip out of the fascia or the hangers themselves bend.
The repair: clean the run, refasten or replace the hangers at proper spacing, and reset the slope so water heads for the outlet. If the screws pulled out because the wood behind them has rotted, that has to be dealt with first, and we will say so rather than drive fresh screws into soft wood.

Water getting in behind
When a gutter overflows at the back instead of the front, or hangs too far below the roof edge, water runs down the face of the fascia. The original wood trim on older homes in Duncan, Chemainus and Ladysmith takes the worst of this. It shows as peeling paint, dark streaks or soft spots on the fascia and soffit.
The repair: rehang the gutter at the right height and check that the drip edge sends water into it, not behind it. Rotten boards are carpentry, and we will tell you when one is past holding a gutter.
Snow, ice and falling limbs
The higher ground toward Shawnigan Lake and Lake Cowichan, and up toward the Malahat, gets more snow than the valley floor. Snow sliding off a steel roof can peel a gutter forward in one go. Ice forming in a blocked gooseneck splits elbows and opens seams. And the windstorms that come through in late fall bring down fir and maple limbs that crush a section or knock a downspout off the wall.
The repair: straighten or replace the damaged length, reseal the joints, and refit or replace the elbows. On roofs that shed snow every winter, we point out where the gutter is most exposed so you can plan for it.

Salt air and old metal
Homes close to the water at Cowichan Bay, Crofton, Chemainus and Maple Bay live with salt in the air. Steel screws rust, straps corrode, and older galvanized gutters, still hanging on some of the valley’s older houses, rust through from the inside where water has sat in them.
The repair: replace rusted fasteners and straps, and cut out a failed section where the rest of the run is sound. When rust has reached most of the length, patching is money spent twice, and we will tell you it has reached replacement.
Knocks at ground level
On acreages and rural lots, downspouts lose more fights than gutters do. Ride-on mowers, trailers backing up to the shop, livestock and firewood stacks all catch the bottom of a downspout. A crushed elbow, or a downspout knocked out of its leader, sends roof water against the foundation, often without anyone noticing until the crawlspace is damp.
The repair: replace the damaged length or elbow, refit the downspout to its leader or extension, and refasten the straps. If the same downspout keeps getting hit, we will suggest where it could be rerouted or protected.

Repair or replace
Most of what is above can be repaired. A run reaches replacement when the metal itself has failed along much of its length, when joints keep reopening however often they are sealed, or when the gutter is simply too small for the roof it drains. We give you that judgement straight, with the reason behind it, before any money goes into a repair that will not last.

Repairs go best on clean gutters
Sealant will not bond to a trough full of muck, and slope cannot be judged under a mat of needles. So repairs start with a clean. When we spot a small fault during a gutter cleaning, we may be able to sort it on the visit. Larger work gets its own free quote, so you know exactly what you are agreeing to before we start.

Got questions?
Gutter repair questions
My gutter is pulling away from the house. Can you fix it?
Usually. Most of the time the hangers have bent or their screws have stripped out under the weight of wet debris.
We clean the run, rehang it with sound fasteners and reset the slope. If the wood behind has gone soft, we tell you, because new screws will not hold in rotten fascia.
I had a joint sealed last year and it is leaking again. Why?
Often the sealant went onto a dirty or damp surface, or the run is still moving because a hanger nearby is loose.
We clean the joint back to bare metal, let it dry, reseal it, and check the hangers on either side so the joint is not being pulled apart.
Do you replace rotten fascia boards?
No. Fascia is carpentry, and it is better done by a carpenter.
We will show you where the board is soft and how far it runs, so you know what to ask for. Once the board is replaced, we can rehang the gutter on it.
A branch came down on my gutter in a windstorm. What now?
Keep clear of the section if it is hanging loose. Then get in touch and we will look at whether it can be straightened and refastened or needs a new length.
Bent sections often leak at the nearest joints too, so we check those as well.
My downspout has come off the wall. Can you put it back?
Yes. We refit it to the outlet and the leader or extension, and replace any broken straps or crushed elbows.
If it was knocked off by a mower or a vehicle, we can suggest a different route or some protection so it does not happen again.
Do you work on old galvanized steel gutters?
Yes, where they are still sound. Some older Cowichan Valley homes still have them on at least one side.
Steel tends to rust through from the inside. If most of a run has reached that point, patching it is money spent twice, and we will tell you so.
Can gutter repairs be done in the wet season?
Rehanging and refastening, yes. Sealing needs a dry surface, so joint work waits for a dry day.
If you are on a maintenance schedule, we can plan non-urgent repairs for summer.
Do I get a quote before any repair work starts?
Yes, and it is free. We look at the damage and its cause, then quote the work before we start.
Small fixes found during a cleaning can sometimes be done on the visit. We ask you first.
